Just moved to Chicago from Brooklyn and I'm missing my local Russian stores terribly. In Brooklyn I had NetCost and Gourmanoff. What's the equivalent in Chicago? Looking for: black bread, smoked fish, good Eastern European cheeses, real kefir, and pelmeni. Willing to drive across the city. Also — any Russian bakeries? A good Napoleon cake would make my week.

Devon Avenue (around 2600–5200 W Devon) is your answer. Multiple Eastern European grocery stores on that stretch. The whole area is incredibly international — you'll find everything plus Georgian, Ukrainian, and Polish products too.

For the bakery — look for Euro-American Bakery on Touhy Ave in Niles (just north of Chicago). The Napoleon cake is authentic. Also check Eastern European Deli on Milwaukee Ave — great selection.

Thank you both! Devon Ave is going on my list this weekend. This is exactly what I needed.
