My Russian passport expires in 8 months. I know I should start early since it takes time. Has anyone done this recently from the US?
I understand the process involves the Russian consulate, but I've heard they're very backlogged. Is there any way to expedite? Do I need to go in person or can I mail documents?
Also β does my US green card status affect anything in the passport renewal process?

I renewed mine last year through the NYC consulate. Current wait time is 6β8 months, so you're right to start now. You need to go in person for biometrics β no mail option. Book an appointment on the consulate website, bring your current passport, 2 photos, and the filled application form. Green card has no effect on the process.

One tip: book the appointment for the very next available slot, even if it's months away β the schedule fills up constantly. The system opens new slots on Mondays. Set a reminder to check every Monday at 9am.
